Putting a golf ball is not much different than anything we else we do with an object and a stick when the goal is to hit a particular spot.
Shooting pool is a lot closer to short putting than is any other shot in golf. Any target game played on a reduced field is closer to putting than golf is.
The difference is target awareness. You don't need target awareness to hit a stationary ball with a full swing. For that, hitting the ball is the target.
But with short putting, that is not the case. Rather than trying to put a solid hit on a ball while making the club travel as fast as possible on a particular line, with putting you are required to hit a very specific target. And at the correct speed.
Those are the same objectives of other reduced field games. From billiard games to target shooting, target awareness if the key to success. It is not as much technique as it is feel.
There comes a time in golf when feel and target awareness trump technique. Golf is unique in that way as it is really two different games. If you want to improve your short putting, don't focus on your putting stroke.
Work on target awareness. You can't imagine how much easier it is to hit a target once you recognize it exists. Think about it. If you are focused on a putting stroke you cannot be also focused on the target.
Being properly target aware is putting made easy.
